Because AS (Asperger’s Syndrome) is a relatively new label in the United States, parents are usually the experts. In fact, in many cases, it is the parent who educates the medical professional and school system on the intricacies of living with AS. I would urge any teacher, health professional, or family member to trust the parents’ knowledge and intuition regarding their child with AS. It is sad, but often true, that professionals discount the input of parents, particularly when the parents are emotional and impassioned. I would also urge the professionals to join with parents as true team members and decision makers in the best interest of the child with AS. An adversarial relationship does no one any good.
